A Long‐Lived Planetesimal Dynamo Powered by Core Crystallization

چکیده
The existence of numerous iron meteorite groups indicates that some planetesimals underwent melting led to metal-silicate segregation, sometimes producing metallic cores. Meteorite paleomagnetic records suggest crystallization these cores generated dynamo magnetic fields. Here we describe the history partially differentiated IIE parent body. This is first planetesimal for which have a time-resolved record constrained by 40Ar/39Ar chronometry spanning several tens million years (Ma). We find core body dynamo, likely powered crystallization, starting before 78 ± 13 Ma after solar system formation and lasting at least 80 Ma. Such extended suggests composed substantial fraction ( 13%–19% core-to-body radius ratio depending on body’s radius), indicating efficient within planetesimals.

The Case Against an Early Lunar Dynamo Powered by Core Convection
Paleomagnetic analyses of lunar samples indicate that the Moon had a dynamo-generated magnetic field with ~50 μT surface field intensities between 3.85 and 3.56 Ga followed by a period of much lower (≤ ~5 μT) intensities that persisted beyond 2.5 Ga. However, we determine herein that there is insufficient energy associated with core convection—the process commonly recognized to generate long-li...
متن کاملPlanetesimal Disk Evolution Driven by Planetesimal-planetesimal Gravitational Scattering
We investigate the process of an inhomogeneous planetesimal disk evolution caused by the planetesimal-planetesimal gravitational scattering. We develop a rather general approach based on the kinetic theory which self-consistently describes the evolution in time and space of both the disk surface density and its kinematic properties — dispersions of eccentricity and inclination. The gravitationa...

متن کاملPlanetesimal disk evolution driven by embryo-planetesimal gravitational scattering
The process of gravitational scattering of planetesimals by a massive protoplanetary embryo is explored theoretically. We propose a method to describe the evolution of the disk surface density, eccentricity, and inclination caused by the embryoplanetesimal interaction. It relies on the analytical treatment of the scattering in two extreme regimes of the planetesimal epicyclic velocities: shear-...
متن کاملMars: a new core-crystallization regime.
The evolution of the martian core is widely assumed to mirror the characteristics observed for Earth's core. Data from experiments performed on iron-sulfur and iron-nickel-sulfur systems at pressures corresponding to the center of Mars indicate that its core is presently completely liquid and that it will not form an outwardly crystallizing iron-rich inner core, as does Earth. Instead, planetar...
